Creative background. Technical direction.

Design thinking, AI tools, and real projects.

A varied background across media, design, technology and the natural world. Currently retraining in AI and modern web development, and putting it into practice.

Currently: AI Now! training programme (Opiframe – Uusimaa, March–September 2026) – actively seeking a company partner for the on-the-job learning phase. Download programme info or visit Opiframe.

A broad background, now with a clear direction.

I'm Joakim (Joe) – based in Helsinki, originally from an international background. I've always been interested in how things work – technology, the natural world, visual communication. That curiosity has taken me in a few different directions over the years.

I've done web and media work in London, underwater videography in Southeast Asia, film and TV in New Zealand, studied geology, and run a small business in Finland. Every chapter has added something.

Right now I'm focused on AI tools, digital products and modern web development – partly through formal training, partly by building things. It's where my interests and the current job market meet.

I work well independently and equally enjoy being part of a team. I communicate clearly and am comfortable in multicultural settings – Finnish and English are both native languages for me, though English is the stronger of the two. In this field that matters, since most of the tools, documentation and conversation around AI happens in English.

Design thinking

Clarity over decoration. An interface that works well should feel effortless – the complexity stays out of the user's way.

Technology

I like understanding how things are built. Knowing the constraints helps me think about what's actually possible – and what to push against.

AI as interface

I'm increasingly interested in how AI can guide users through complex decisions – not by removing choice, but by making choices feel manageable.

What frustrates me about badly designed interfaces is almost always the same thing: complexity that's been left for the user to figure out rather than resolved by the designer. Too many options at once, navigation that goes everywhere and nowhere, features that don't behave the way they suggest they will. I like finding ways to break complicated tasks into steps that feel simple.

Get in touch

I'm looking for a company to partner with through the AI Now! training programme. The structure is straightforward: classroom training and on-the-job learning combined throughout a 120-day programme. The cost to the employer is low, and if the placement leads to employment, Finnish wage subsidy (palkkatuki) may apply for up to a further six months.

I'm also open to freelance work or collaboration, particularly around digital content, web or AI-assisted projects.
